WWCS coasts on first inning success

“We come out hitting the ball. We had four or five hits in the first inning and good plate appearances where we got a walk or two so we executed well there.” That’s how Washburn-Wilton-Center-Stanton coach Kip Erickson describes hit team’s first frame against Shiloh Christian in Region 8 baseball action last Friday. Through cloudy skies and misting rain, the Cardinals were able to jump on the defending region champions early and never looked back en route to their 8-6 win at the University of Mary campus. Leading the charge was Brett Schreiner who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Wendlin Berger also went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. In the first inning a pair of wild pitches put Schreiner in scoring position. Then Jared Hruby scored him on the RBI single. WWCS expanded the lead as Kirk Sailer blasted a two RBI double. It opened the floodgates as the Cardinals used the squeeze and smart base running to get ahead 6-0 in the frame.
