Former McClusky resident and Gazette employee Ron Hipp, McClusky High School class of ’60, has penned a memoir that is worth reading.
While researching his family genealogy, Hipp discovered there was a story to be told, and he tells it well. From his family’s European beginnings through his high school graduation, His tale brings alive the sights, sounds and even smells of earlier times. The book includes information on the family tree in the last few back pages.
From the preface of “Getting Started:”
The second part of the book is about growing up in a small North Dakota prairie town during the 1950s. Hipp states, “McClusky was as good a place to grow up in as I could have hoped for and you may sense my affection for it. I offer it as an answer to a possible query, from my grandchildren, about what life was like for Grandpa when he was little. It may also help my friends from that time to remember some of the fun we had”.
Ron describes life in Mc-Clusky in the ‘50s with humor, self-deprecation and astonishing detail. He reminds us of the town’s economy in the era:
As the county seat with all the attendant jobs only added to the activity. The population was about 750, but there were three car dealerships, four implement shops, a weekly newspaper, two attorneys, a dentist, a movie theater, three grain elevators, nine churches and two bars.
