Grand time had by all

Submitted by Mildred Kissee

Many World War II veterans met at a gala on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015. The celebration started at 2 p.m. at the World War Memorial building in Bismarck, ND.

The following is a report on what the attendees (Kissees) sent to their children.

(It has been edited somewhat for clarity, we hope).

"A couple of weeks ago the Bismarck Tribune had an article on this event with a number to call for more info. I urged your Dad to inquire. He did. He was then registered as one of the honored guests. This event was in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the end of WW II and the reunion of the l64th E Company.

"And celebrate we did, with a USO-style Victory Program and Dance for all North Dakota WW II veterans. As with the old USO, the Red Cross was there with donuts and coffee.

"More than 120 veterans came from across the country. The 164th infantry trained in the very building we were in for this event.

"This group of very young North Dakota men was the first Army Unit to arrive on Guadalcanal to drive off the enemy. The Japanese were landing three to our one on the island. The Marines needed help.

"The Marines had moved the battlefront to prepare for the Japanese counterattack and left E Company to cover the flank.
