Legion Auxiliary hosts supper honoring local veterans

Submitted by Deb Sparrow

On March 6, 2016 the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA), James Roberts Post 124, hosted a supper at the McClusky Community Center to honor local veterans. Auxiliary members spent the early part of the day preparing for the evening event. Sixty veterans, Auxiliary members, and spouses enjoyed a short program, a delicious meal, cake, ice cream, and Bingo.

Auxiliary president Lynn Helm called the gathering to order with the pledge to the flag. A video on the history of the US flag was viewed followed by singing the national anthem. Deb Sparrow presented a brief history of the American Legion and Auxiliary Chaplain Sheila Majors, gave the prayer before the meal was served.

Each veteran stood to share basic information regarding their service. Memories and thoughts of personal sacrifice were revoked from those listening. A poem entitled "I am A Veteran" was read by Legion Commander, Vernon Lasher.

Following the meal of escalloped potatoes and ham, green beans, coleslaw, dinner rolls, cranberries, and a fruit cup, many stayed to play Bingo. Veteran Darv Engel called the Bingo games. Each player left with a prize
