The following article was originally sent to Virginia Hieb Wanzek, Ruth Hempel Shearer, Delaine Popke, Floyd Pounds (Carol Hempel), Dean Hempel, Bob Hempel, Roy Dockter, and Irene Popke Carter. It is reprinted here as a special Fourth of July treat for those who enjoy a good story. Hey you Denhoffites, how about a little trip? I’ve been thinkin’ about you and many more as I am recuperating from a cold bug. I feel like being a little bit frivolous. Wanna come along? Let’s take a nostalgic trip back in time, like maybe 70 years or so. Bring your kids, your grandkids and greatgrands. Join me as we tour old Denhoff with some narration according to Mildred. I hope you are wearing comfortable shoes. We have permission to use the former Nazarene Church as a parking lot for the tour buses. What a time we had here, especially at Christmas with Mom Hempel, Mom Poelke and Lydia Gesellchen helping us youngsters learn our “recitations” and little songs. Remember that big tree with real candles on it? Of course, the church is now shipping headquarters for Golden Flax. I’ll point out the location of the Catholic Church across the street.
