School superintendent candidate interviewed

By GABLE RHOADS

The McClusky School board met in a special meeting to interview superintendent candidate Dr. Cheri Poitra. Poitra is currently a special education instructor and head track and field coach at Belcourt High School.

Poitra holds Doctor of Education, Master of Education in Special Education, and Bachelor of Elementary/Early Childhood Education degrees. Poitra also has credentials for school superintendent, principal and special education director.

School Board President Brian Larson asked Poitra to tell the board about herself.

Poitra said she has five children. The youngest is one year of age and the oldest will be joining the Marine Corps after graduation this spring.

She stated she had earned her doctoral last year, and had done research for her dissertation in England. Poitra added that her life revolves around her kids and career and that she also loves to golf.

School Board Member Stacy Sease asked Poitra why she was interested in the job. Poitra replied that she was looking for a new challenge. She stated that living on a reservation is very political and the school boards control the schools.

Poitra added that she wouldn’t be able to lead a school system as she envisions it if she didn’t leave the reservation. "The only way to experience it is to leave," she stated.
