Law enforcement officials in Sheridan County were out in force the Christmas Holiday weekend, cracking down on impaired drivers. The public can expect to see the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Department out on both Christmas and New Year’s holiday weekends to keep the roads, highways, and public safe from impaired drivers.
Law enforcement officials in Sheridan County have received funding to conduct overtime enforcement on impaired driving. The North Dakota Department of Transportation distributed funding to the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Department to conduct overtime enforcement in effort to decrease impaired driving.
Impaired driving affects thousands of Americans traveling every year. Every hour, drivers are arrested for driving under the influence or driving while intoxicated and, for many, this will not be their first offense. Nationwide, one person every 45 minutes, approximately 32 people a day, died in traffic crashes involving a vehicle driver or a motorcycle operator with an alcohol concentration above the legal limit.
In 2008, there were 104 fatalities on North Dakota roadways. Alcohol use and a lack of seat belts continue to be contributing factors in crashes. Alcohol was a contributing factor in 53 of the 104 fatalities (51 percent).
