Student score well on SCD Tour

The Annual 7th Grade Conservation tour, sponsored by Sheridan County, North and South McHenry County SCDs, was held on Thursday, September 18th at the Lonetree Wildlife Management Area South of Martin.

There were 69 students present representing Anamoose, Drake, Goodrich, McClusky, Velva, Towner, and Granville. They spent the morning on rotating tours between five demonstration sites.

Jim Collins, Environmental Specialist from the ND Dept. of Health spoke on "Water Quality"; he explained the difference between point source and non-point source pollution using a watershed model. This model shows how different pollutants can end up in lakes and streams.

Blake Schaan, Wildlife Resource Management Supervisor, presented "Wildlife." He discussed the various threats to wildlife and their needs of survival. Blake had various wildlife pelts on hand for the students to view.

"Conservation" was presented by David Shannon, NRCS Soil Conservationist from Sheridan County, and Randy Myers, NRCS Technician from North McHenry. A rainfall simulator was used, showing the effect that water erosion has on clean, black soil; native grass;
