Got that can do spirit?

Applications are being accepted for a new award sponsored by the Friends of Lake Sakakawea. The award is called "The Tolly."

The award recognizes the late Tolly Holtan and her can-do spirit when it comes to outdoor recreation opportunities in the state.

Tolly and her husband, Byron, along with their family, developed Indian Hills Resort on the north shore of Lake Sakakawea. The Holtans later sold the resort to their daughter, Kelly Jo and Dale Sorge.

Tolly was a trailblazer in her spirit and conviction.

The Friends of Lake Sakakawea are asking for nominations for the award. Criteria includes one who exhibits an interest in expanding recreational opportunities in the state.

The deadline for applications is Aug. 1. The award will be presented at the Friends’ annual meeting this fall.

Tolly was a strong advocate for lake access and frequently spoke to North Dakota’s congressional delegation and even traveled to Washington, D.C. in the 1980s to display pictures of the drought ravaged lake to a federal congressional committee.
