The younger athletes stepped up to a higher level of competition this past Saturday when the Central McLean Cougars competed at Hazen in the first track meet of the season.
The girls’ two-mile relay team made up of junior high athletes Emily Eichhorst, Brooklynn Anderson, McKenna Wilson and Mackenzie Snyder brought home the Cougars’ best finish of the day, placing fourth in the 3200-meter race with a time of 11:02.34. Madison Kurle stepped in for Wilson in the mile relay, joining Eichhorst, Anderson and Snyder, helping the team place seventh in the 1600-meter race with a time of 4:36.40.
The Cougar girls finished the day with an 18th-place tie with Stanley-Powers Lake, tallying 13 points. Carrington won the meet with 118 points, followed by Hazen with 97.5.
The girls’ 400-meter relay made up of Caitlyn Berg Kylan Beyl, Chailee Berg and Madison Holm placed sixth in their race, finishing in 54.96, while Kennedy Sondrol added some points with her sixth-place finish in the high jump, clearing 4-7.
Cougar coach Lee Weisgarber says it was nice to see the younger athletes have such a good day.
“I was particularly impressed with the junior high girls competing today,” he said. “Both of these relays placed against some tough older girls.”
