Trojans trip Titans
By TIM HANSON
The Trojans boys team beat the Towner-Granville- Upham Titans 64-55 in a battle at the Minot Civic Auditorium this past Saturday night on Jan. 2.
The first game of the new year saw Grant Singer lead the Trojans with 28 points; other in double figures were Shane Nelson with 13 and Tucker Fylling with 11.
The Titans also had three players in double figures: Dillon Jesz led his team with 16, followed by Ian Keller with 13, and Brad Bethke with 10.
The Titans took a 12-8 lead at the 3:58 mark of the first quarter on a Stetson Brandt jumper. Then a 6-0 run by the Trojans put them up 14-12. Grant Singer started the run with a shot off the glass for two, followed by a pair of deuces from Shane Nelson; the second one coming at the 1:43 mark to put the Trojans in front.
Titan Tyler Thorson tied the game at 14-all at the 1:28 mark. Seconds later, Singer scored a bucket and free throw to go up 17-14.
Ian Keller scored for the Titans at the :58 mark and Tucker Fylling tallied a free throw to finish the first quarter scoring with the Trojans on top18-16.
The second quarter started with Nelson scoring on a fast break for the Trojans to take a 20-16 lead. A bucket from Zach Thompson and a triple from Dillon Jesz put the Titans in front by one, 21-20, at the 6:26 mark.
The Trojans then scored 11 unanswered points to take a 31-21 lead. Ryan Rauhauser scored a deuce; Nelson a couple of deuces; and Singer a couple of buckets and a free throw in the 11-0 run.
Brandt ended the Trojans’ run with a shot from just inside the free-throw-line at the 1:58 mark.
The Trojans scored twice in the last minute of the first half: Singer on a shot from the left side off the glass at the 0:49 mark and Trevor Thomas with a triple just before the first-half-buzzer sounded to put the Trojans up, 36-23, at the half.
The Titans did not make it to the free-throw-line the first half as the Trojans committed only four fouls in the first half.
The Titan scored first in the third quarter with Brad Bethke getting a bucket. The Titans then threw a press on the Trojans causing a turnover and a foul; both foul shots were no good for the Titans. Singer grabbed the rebound and fired it to Fylling for a lay up, breaking the Titans’ press for a few minutes.
Ragged play and turnover for both teams left the Trojans on top at the end of the third quarter 45-35.
The Trojans maintained an 8-10 point lead most of the fourth quarter but a bucket from Keller and a triple from Jesz cut the lead to 58-51 at the 2:04 mark.
