Elbowoods Classic recalls great teams of the past

The Elbowoods high school basketball teams hold a treasured place in the history of the Three Affiliated Tribes, having made six trips to the North Dakota State Class B Boys Basketball Tournament in the decade before the town was flooded by the completion of Garrison Dam.
A tournament honoring the memory of those great teams has been reborn and will take place this weekend, April 15-17 at the Northern Lights Wellness Center and New Town High School gymnasium. The Elbowoods Classic is being organized by MHA Tourism and the MHA Fitness and Recreation Department.
Darian Morsette, director of MHA Tourism, said there are 16 boys teams and five girls teams registered for the tournament. The teams are coming from across North Dakota as well as South Dakota, Minnesota and Montana. Morsette said that one criteria to participate in the tournament was that all the players had to be attending school.
