Lady Braves clinch number one seed

By Jerry W. Kram

The Parshall Lady Braves went undefeated in District 15 regular season play with a closely fought 61-54 victory over Watford City in Parshall on Tuesday.

The win clinches the number one seed for the Lady Braves in the District 15 Girls Basketball Tournament that starts on Friday, Feb. 28. The Lady Wolves dropped to the third seed in the district. Parshall Head Coach Mervyn Packineau said the team had worked hard for their position in the tournament.

"It really feels good because there are some really good teams in this district," he said. "We had a hard fight with New Town and a hard fight with Watford City and we came out on top. I’m glad we played a tougher schedule down the stretch this year. It really helped us. I give those other teams all the credit, they made this a tough district."

Packineau said the Lady Braves were a tough team. The score of the game was within one or two baskets for almost the entire game until the Lady Braves started to pull away in the last four minutes of the final quarter. Packineau said the Lady Wolves press defense make the Lady Braves rush some of their shots.

"They played us tough," Packineau said. "They made us react to their press and we tried rushing it. But once we slowed down we would get up by five and then they would come back and go up by two. It was a seesaw battle but we came out ahead."

Cheyenne Packineau sparked the offense with 24 points, mostly from the paint. Alexis Woods added 12 points. The two players combined for 28 rebounds.
