No Three-peat for New Town

 

Parshall Braves, Watford City to play for State berth

The New Town Lady Eagles’ run as champions of Region 8 Girls Basketball came to an end at the hands of the Watford City Wolves 53-50 in tournament action Tuesday at Williston State College. The Wolves will face the the Parshall Lady Braves who handily dispatched District 16 Champion Stanley 58-42 to earn a spot in the finals.

The Lady Braves came out fast in the second game Tuesday night. Kiara Packineau launched three successful three point bombs which loosened up the Bluejay’s defense, allowing Cheyenne Packineau room to dominate in the post. Along with three field goals, Cheyenne Packineau was 6 for 6 from the free throw line in the first half, and 9 for 12 for the game. The Lady Braves led the Bluejays 19-10 after the first quarter and 30-18 at the half.

Head Coach Mervin Packineau said the team was playing more relaxed than it had in recent games. He was also happy about the team’s free throw shooting, which had suffered in the second half of the regular season.

Parshall turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, holding Stanley’s Chai Pappa to just 10 points. Over the course of the game, the Braves force 26 Bluejay turnovers and scored 15 points off those turnovers. The Lady Braves outscored the Bluejays 20-11 in the third quarter and coasted to the 58-42 final score.
