WILLISTON - An entire girls basketball season boiled down to one free throw in the Region 8 tournament.
Unfortunately for the North Shore Wildcats, Ellie Gillund of the Divide County Maroons sank the first of two attempts to give the Maroons a 47-46 lead with less than 4 seconds remaining.
Gillund missed her second charity toss, North Shore grabbed the rebound and Hadlie Hansen made a desperation shot as time expired, ending the 2011 season for the Wildcats.
It was a tough loss for North Shore, but if it’s any consolation, it was a tough win for Divide County as both teams struggled to gain the upper hand throughout this thrilling opening round Region 8 game.
In fact, there were 10 lead changes and three ties in this game that featured clever three-point shooting from both teams and key free throws that often changed the complexity of the contest.
Divide County jumped out to an early lead but Tessa Walters tied the game at 12 late in the first quarter before Divide County hit a three-pointer just before the buzzer.
