Parshall’s girls cross country team turned out its best performance of the 2009 season last Saturday in Valley City with a second-place showing out of 38 teams competing.
Parshall’s harriers, under the guidance of head coach Harlan Johnson, finished the race with 157 points, just 20 behind the eventual winner New Town, which topped the charts at 137.
Eighth-grader Alexis Woods was the top performer for the lady Braves with her time of 16:25. Running like a seasoned pro, Woods finished eighth, just two seconds behind Watford City’s Sibee Jokela and about a minute behind the winner of the race, Jayli Fimbres of New Town in 15:38.
But thanks to Devanee Hale, 25th, Maisey Gillies, 33rd and Desiree Wells, 37th, Parshall was propeled into second place in a field that included the likes of powerhouses Rugby, Griggs County, Grand Forks Central, Bowman County and Central Cass.
In all, 10 Parshall girls competed in the race and Johnson was pleased with the overall performance of his team.
The boys topped out in 10th place with Kenny Wells individually finishing second, just 32 seconds behind former teammate Justin Many Ribs who is competing for New Town. Wells, who has been one of the most consistent runners this season in Class B cross country, did not have his best time this year, according to Johnson, but said this is a good gauge for Wells since the state cross country meet will be held on this same, Valley City track.
