Parshall harriers take top 10 honors at state
Wells second in boys, Woods 13th in girls

Harlan Johnson knew his cross country runners would have their hands full in the state Class B cross country meet held last Saturday in Valley City. But the veteran coach helped both his teams finish in the top 10 of their respective divisions including one individual in the top 10.
Kenny Wells, whose father Ken is assistant coach, blasted through the strong field of 177 runners to place second in 16:46, passed only by his friend and neighbor Justin Many Ribs of New Town.
Wells a sophomore, has been a consistent second-place finisher in meets all season, with the only exception when he beat Many Ribs in the West Region meet in Beulah several weeks ago.
Johnson said Wells has a lot of determination for a young kid and it showed in the state meet. He strongly believes Wells has a great high school career ahead of him yet and he already has a state second place award, as well as All-State honors.
Junior Trey Bruce ran a great race as well, finishing in 24th overall, which helped the Braves finish in fifth place overall out of the 36 teams represented. Bruce’s time of 18:31 placed him six seconds behind Shanley Fogerty of Valley City and two seconds ahead of Wayne Englehard of Valley City.
The big surprise, however, was in Scott Hale’s run. Hale, a newcomer to high school cross country, crossed the line in 27th place in one of his best performances running in a high school meet. Hale’s time of 18:39 was just a second out of reach of Michael DeVille of Mandaree.
Johnson was happy with the fifth-place finish and 191 score. Rugby, New Town, Valley City, Grafton and Parshall is some pretty good company and here is Parshall hanging right in there with much larger schools in Grafton and Valley City.
The girls came back with high honors in their own right. Alexis Woods put in a strong performance, taking 13th place and crossing the line in 16:13. Woods, an eighth-grader, was the highest placed finisher for the Parshall girls. Her finish largely led the Braves with their
