After finishing strong in Region 7 track meets last Saturday in Tioga, Parshall head coach Harlan Johnson is confident in his athletes who will be competing in the state Class B track meet starting today in Bismarck.
Seven Parshall girls have qualified and five boys in hopes of racking up numbers at state as impressive as they were in Region 7. Those seven girls will be competing in nine separate events so Johnson believes they will have a good chance of winning some hardware.
As an example, Parshall finished second to Watford City in last week’s Tioga meet, but only because Watford City had a lot of fifth and sixth placers whose points added up in the end. The Wolves won that meet with 208, while Parshall was second with 152, one of their highest point totals of the 2010 season.
That meet produced a second qualifying time for Samantha Risan, who took first in the 200-meter dash in , followed by teammate Madeleinne Zacher in third and Alexis Woods in fourth. Risan will be competing in both the 100 and 200.
McKayla Nielsen, who has had an up and down season, really excelled in Tioga, winning the shot put and the discus to send her to state in two events as well as Risan. Nielsen beat Watford City’s Jaiden Faine in the discus by 2 inches and New Town’s Carolyn Wolf in the shot put by about a foot.
