Parshall High School is sending a young track team to the state meet in Bismarck today, but judging how these kids have performed throughout the season, they will be scoring some points.
Jayma Odermann is the lone senior from Parshall and will be competing in the high jump. In last week’s Region 7 meet in Watford City, Odermann leaped 4 feet, 5 inches, which was good enough for second place, missing Stanley’s Shaunessy Dauwalder’s 4-8, by just three inches.
Junior Jaren Enockson has qualified in the triple jump and will be attempting to hit his qualifying jump, set April 24 during the Watford City Invitational.
Enockson triple jumped 46 feet, 2 inches, which essentially sets a state record. The current state record in Class B boys track in the triple jump is 46 feet, 0.5 inches. The state qualifying mark is 41 feet, 6 inches.
Enockson has hit the state qualifying mark in most of his competition; however, surpassing 46 feet is going to be a challenge, according to head coach Harlan Johnson. The head coach said Enockson is certainly capable of hitting 46-2 again, and has been consistent enough to challenge the mark.
McKayla Nielsen, only a freshman, is competing in the shot put and discus and Johnson expects big things out of Nielsen. She took first in the discus last week in Watford City with a toss of 95 feet and added 10 points to Parshall’s total. Her shot put throw of 29 feet, 3 3/4 inches, was good enough for second place in that field event.
Samantha Risan has qualified for state in the 100-meter and 200-meter runs. She placed in both events last week; and the junior has had some impressive runs this season. In the Region 7 meet, Risan missed the mark in the 100 by a meter one-fourth of a second and finished it in 13 seconds flat. Her 200-meter run of: 27.6, was 15 ticks shy of the winner.
On paper, Alexis Woods would be the surprise state qualifier for Parshall, but her coach doesn’t hesitate to boast her talent in the 400-meter run. Johnson also coached her in cross country last fall.
