The New Town Eagles boys basketball team enters the holiday break with two lopsided victories to its credit. The Eagles defeated the White Shield Warriors 87-48 on Thursday and whipped the Stanley Blue Jays 81-38 on Friday.
Thursday’s match with White Shield was close for a while a while in the second quarter. After outscoring the Warriors by 11 in the first quarter, the Eagles were a little flat for the first five minutes of the second quarter, allowing the Warriors to close within four points. The Warriors got several quick baskets on steals on the inbounds plays and by pressing the Eagles on defense to steal the ball
"We had some miscommunications." said Head Coach Chuck Hunter. "We have to clear those up before tournament time. We need to be ready and not have those kind of things happen."
However, in the last three minutes of the half the Eagles kicked into another gear and closed the half with a commanding 18 point lead, 45-27.
"We came out a little flat in the second quarter," said Head Coach Chuck Hunter. "The guys were a little too excited to get up and down the court. We had to make some adjustments to get back on track. We told them we would have spurts like we had at the end of the quarter where we score 10, 12 or 14 points."
The game wasn’t close in the second half as the Eagles built their lead to 36 by end of the third quarter finished the game with a score of 87-48.
"Once we started getting our runs we started playing better," Hunter said. "Our defense got better and we got more aggressive. I explained to our guys that we were playing back to back games, so once we got ahead they should be ready to go in and out and get ready for tomorrow night."
