New Town blows out Tioga, move to semis

WILLISTON - It didn’t take long to figure out this was going to be a runaway train.
New Town took control from the opening tip off, rolling to an 11-0 lead and coasting to a 64-32 win over the Tioga Pirates in the opening round of the Region 8 Girls Basketball Tournament Monday afternoon.
Starting out with the youngest team in Region 8 and perhaps the youngest team to reach the playoffs in a long time, the Eagles were never threatened as they looked for opportunities under the basket and from the top of the key.
Gabby Wilkinson hit the first two buckets for New Town, Baeleigh Brady scored and the next thing Tioga knew, they were trailing by a touchdown and a field goal.
Finally, at four minutes into the game, Tioga’s Erin Moore hit a free throw to stymie New Town’s hope for a shutout. Immediately after Moore’s charity toss, Brady sank another layup to widen the Eagles lead.
Tioga did manage to climb to 4, all on free throws, when Moore sank two more and Adriana Puchany hit one to end the quarter at 13-4.
New Town rolled in the second, seemingly scoring at will. After Puchany hit a trey to slice the Eagles lead to 17-11, the two freshmen, two sophomores and junior that make up the New Town team, got busy. In fact, as the half was coming to a close, Brady hit a three-pointer to ignite the crowd and at the same time demoralize the Pirates with a 28-20 lead.
