Mandaree pulled a huge upset and Parshall climbed its way to the top four as both teams will now play in the Region 8 tournament that begins in Williston Monday.
The Warriors, a big underdog to the Watford City Wolves, gave patrons their money’s worth Monday night in the Northern Lights Community Center in pulling off the 71-65 win to take the District 15 championship.
A top scorer all season, Devin Yellow Bird didn’t disappoint the large Mandaree crowd in attendance with his 26 points, which led all scorers. Yellow Bird was followed by Michael DeVille with 17 and David Dobbs added 12 in a balanced scoring effort.
Watford City, which never had the lead in this contest, was led by Kevin Sanford with 22 points, Justin Flatland chipped in 19 and Christian Schultz also scored 19 for the Wolves.
The game was a close contest in the early stages, but as it progressed, the Warriors began pulling away and many of the fans sensed the Warriors were in a good spot. Mandaree’s players never seemed to get tired and substitutions were apparently made cleverly as they maintained a fairly strong lead throughout the game, holding a 7-point edge at halftime.
In a regional play-in game, Parshall took care of the New Town Eagles, winning 78-67 in a game in which the Braves took an early lead and held it throughout, never being threatened by the Eagles.
