Ask questions, save a life

By Michael Johnson, Editor

Sometimes all it takes is one question to save a person’s life. It’s often the problem that that one question is a difficult one. Kim Rickel, a teacher at Mandan High School, asked the question one day at school, on a day like any other. She remembers the student’s smile and how it would light up the room as she entered. But when the student became noticeably depressed, hanging her head through the day, Rickel took her aside and asked her if she was all right. Of course she wasn’t. She asked her if she was depressed. She had been for quite some time. She knew she had to ask the tough one. "Have you considered committing suicide?" Rickel asked.
