Augustana Church to celebrate 100 years

By Michael Johnson, Editor

Those Swedish Lutherans had a good idea when they decided to start the Augustana Lutheran Church in Underwood 100 years ago. They knew that the church would grow and flourish in the community. They knew that someone, someday would celebrate the church’s history when they turned 100 years old. They probably couldn’t have guessed that the coordinator of that celebration would be Renee Fransen. Fransen has been working with a crew of other gals that are hard at work creating a history of the church and are preparing to show off that rich history June 29 and 30 at the Augustana Lutheran Church in Underwood. All are welcome to the open house and social on June 29 and reservations are being taken for the supper by calling 442-5552 or 442-5280. Then come on back for the church service on June 30. The group has been sending  RSVPs and invitations to past and present members to get an idea of who may be coming. Fransen is hopeful they will seat about 150 people. Fransen says folks can call or just show up if they plan to attend. Fransen has been a member of the church for 33 years. She recalls the influx of people that came in the 1980s as the power plant was built near Underwood.
