Working to grant a lot of patrons’ wishes, the Underwood School Board on Monday afternoon adopted its final 2014-15 school calendar, taking into consideration a lot of recommendations from patrons as well as staff members.

The first day of school this fall will be Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2014, compared to Aug. 21 this past year, and the last day of school will be Thursday, May 28, 2015, with graduation Sunday, May 31. This year’s last day of school will be May 21.

One request the board members tried to accommodate was a later start date, although they did opt to continue to start before Labor Day, and they were still able to avoid going into June.

The board also mulled over some patrons’ and staff members’ concerns regarding Christmas break, many of them saying that they would like a full two weeks off, which the board opted to approve. The final day of school will be Dec. 19, 2014, and the first day back will be Jan. 5, 2015.

Along with the discussion about a full two weeks off, board members have also heard requests to not hold activities such as basketball games during the Christmas break. No decision was made on the scheduling of games during the break, but it did warrant discussion.

"Some people thought there really wasn’t much of a break," noted Supt. Brandt Dick. The board will discuss not holding games, or at least not so many, over the break.
