Changes may be coming to cleanup week

By Michael Johnson, Editor

If you plan on getting rid of a refrigerator or air conditioning unit during the annual cleanup week in Underwood it might cost you a bit more than in years past. City commissioners discussed the cost effectiveness of taking old appliances that had to have freon removed from them and decided that it wasn’t very cost effective. Last year, the city charged $10 per appliance but ended up paying much more than that themselves to cover the costs of removal. Cleanup week is May 10 through 15 and the commissioners must decide whether to take any of the appliances or charge more to do so this year. Either way, commissioners felt there wasn’t a great way to handle the situation. "We’re gonna have a problem no matter what," commissioner Earl Cottingham said.
