City budget gets $25,000 boost

The city commission approved its second reading of the new budget after getting some good news last Tuesday. The Underwood Park Board recently approved paying the swimming pool bond for this year, which knocked off $25,000 from the city’s expected budget. The deduction of $25,000 from the city’s budget means a drop of about 17 mills, or about $45 off of a home that is valued at $100,000, according to City Auditor Diane Schell.
The board tackled a handful of other items at last week’s meeting, delving into an issue it has been trying to get a handle on – zoning ordinances.
Chris Anderson informed the board he is interested in purchasing the Quality Lumber property on Lincoln, and wants to turn the back lumber storage area into individual cold storage units. The commission and Anderson were informed that downtown area of Underwood is not zoned for individual cold storage units. The commission is currently working with SRS concerning cleaning and clearing up its zoning ordinances. The commissioners discussed an amendment to the current "no cold storage units" on Lincoln Ave., but would like the amendment to indicate that the cold storage units would not be allowed in the store front, and any cold storage units would need to be located at the back of the properties.
