County to purchase signs for Fallen Peace Officer Memorial Highway

The McLean County Commissioners are moving forward with purchasing two signs to be placed on the Fallen Peace Officer Memorial Highway.
During the commission meeting Nov. 4 at the McLean County Courthouse in Washburn, the commissioners approved purchasing two signs to honor the county’s sole peace officer who died in the line of duty in 1917.
During the 69th Legislative Session, a bill was passed to rename portions of N.D. Highway 200 to the North Dakota Fallen Peace Officer Memorial Highway.
On Jan. 21, McLean County leaders voted to write a letter of support for the bill. At that time, Commission Vice Chairman Curt Olson told commissioners there wasn’t really a cost in regards to the name change, but there would be subdivisions with the bill allowing people to come forward and ask for a mile of the highway to be dedicated to fallen peace officer who died in the line of duty.
Olson explained, in the history of McLean County, there is only one officer that died in the line of duty, and it occurred in Wilton in 1917, George L. Dickson.
During the Nov. 4 meeting, the commissioners approved getting two signs made in Dickson’s honor – one to be placed at mile marker 210 going east and one at mile marker 211 going west.
The signs will be roughly 6 feet and will cost $112 each, which will be paid out of the highway budget.
