Grab a napkin: New steak house coming to town

By Michael Johnson, Editor

Scott Sackman and his wife Dawn are the new proud owners of the BobKats Café and Steak House on Lincoln Ave. in Underwood as of April 15. For those who remember the old cafe don’t expect to find the same place when it opens up this summer. "It won’t look like a café when I’m done," Sackman said. "I hope it won’t or I’ll be upset with myself." Soon after finalizing the deal he and his son Mitch went to work cleaning out all the old broken-down equipment in the building and had his office cleared and painted by the next day. Underwood is a fresh start for Sackman, who lost his first restaurant in Fessenden to a fire that started in the neighboring café. His first restaurant was known as T-Bones and the new one will bear that name. The restaurant was well known throughout the region for its steaks and broasted chicken, Sackman said. Sackman remembers getting the call that smoke was coming from next door. By the time the fire department arrived there was still time to save the building but the brand new fire truck had fittings too large for the city hydrants. Within a half-hour, the restaurant was engulfed. It smoldered for the next six days while Sackman tried to think of a plan to start over. Exactly a year after his restaurant burned down Sackman started clearing out the Underwood building. He said he’d be bringing in new seating, flooring, ceiling, a custom bar, cooking equipment and a new outlook on the future.
