Gym use issue back to administration

By Julie Arbach

A policy on use of the school gymnasium is back in the hands of the school’s administrators, after a lengthy discussion at the Feb. 19 school board meeting. Superintendent Dale Ekstrom said a letter sent by the school’s administrators to patrons with keys for the fitness room was the topic of considerable discussion at the January school board meeting. At that time, the board referred the matter to the building and grounds committee for recommendations. Ekstrom said the board spent another half hour discussing the gym issue at the most recent meeting. One of the items, which the building committee did look into, was installing a card system for the outside entrance and fitness room. "The card system could be more easily monitored and controlled than a key system," said Ekstrom. An estimate for the card system according to Ekstrom was given by the committee at just under $3,000. "That would include three readers at the southwest door, the fitness room and the southwest gym door," said Ekstrom. After a lengthy discussion on who should and shouldn’t have keys for the gymnasium, the board was unable to reach a consensus. Due to the varying opinions by school board members, the board decided to send the issue back to the school’s administration to take a second look.
