Haunted happenings

Scares and sweet treats will abound across McLean County on Oct. 31, when residents can choose from a spellbinding lineup of free events.
Underwood
In Underwood, Faith Evangelical and New Life churches will host a community carnival from 5 to 7 p.m. at Underwood City Hall. The fall-tastic gathering will conjure food, games, prize drawings and inflatables.
Washburn
In Washburn, the gourd-geous fun begins at 3:30 p.m. with the Candy Caravan, organized by Washburn Life. Trick-or-treaters can haunt participating businesses along Main Street and the Highway 83 corridor. Watch for a list of boo-sinesses closer to the event.
From 5 to 7 p.m., ghosts and goblins of all ages are invited to Washburn United Methodist Church for a Trunk-or-Treat eek-stravaganza. Hosts should arrive by 4:30 p.m. to decorate their trunks. Inside the church, the Victor B. Wallin American Legion Post will serve free burgers, hot dogs, cider and hot chocolate.
From 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., brave souls can head to the Memorial Hall on Main Street to wander through the Haunted Hallway before settling in for Memorial Hall-oween movies hosted by the Washburn Public Library. A family-friendly short film will show at 7:30 p.m., followed by a PG-rated feature from 8 to 10 p.m. The Legion Post will offer popcorn, water and lemonade.
