Lawson: Each student has gifts

Common core or no common core, Underwood Title 1 teacher Patti Lawson has spent the last 16 years of her life ensuring Underwood’s students are able to master their "readin’, writin’ and ‘rithmatic’ as well as they possibly can before they move on to high school.

Lawson recently retired from the Underwood School District after 16 years leading the Title 1 program, where she helped countless students overcome their struggles with math, reading and writing.

Lawson started her time as a teacher in 1980, in Riverdale, as an elementary teacher.

She took some time off to raise her three daughters before going back to Riverdale as the kindergarten teacher for the 1993-94 school year.

In 1994, Riverdale school officially combined with Underwood, and Lawson was hired as a paraprofessional working with Title 1 teacher Jan Anderson.

She had a one-year stint as the part-time kindergarten teacher in Underwood, then became the full-time Title 1 teacher in 2000.
