Learning respect by the fist and foot

By Michael Johnson, Editor

The old wax on, wax off routine may have seemed a little odd but as many of us know, the discipline taught some important skills in self defense and respect. For the past three years, similar skills have been taught to area youth and adults in Mr. Gary Adam’s self defense class in Underwood. Students come running into the school every Wednesday evening, excited to take part in the fun. But before they cross the doorway into the gym they show their respect to their teacher by stopping and acknowledging him. As long as they are there, the respect continues for their teacher, a third degree black belt. By day, Gary runs Underwood Warehouse Grocery, but Wednesday evenings are all about teaching students about the tenets; self-control, courtesy, perseverance, integrity and indomitable spirit.
