McLean County approves trailer purchase, grant spending and culvert repairs

The McLean County Commission approved several road department purchases and repairs, authorized the spending of homeland security grant funds and addressed concerns about unauthorized speed bumps during its Aug. 4 meeting.
The meeting opened with public comments from DeAnn Lowry, who raised concerns about speed bumps in the Iglehart Subdivision near Garrison. Lowry told commissioners she believes the traffic control devices create safety concerns by slowing emergency vehicle access. Road Superintendent Jim Grey said the county would address the concerns, including inadequate signage and an additional speed bump that had not been authorized.
Commissioners voted to notify the cabin association by letter regarding the concerns and to require approval before any speed bumps are installed next year.
Grey also reported the highway department continues mowing operations despite staffing shortages. Commissioners approved overtime for highway department employees at the superintendent’s discretion to help maintain operations.
The board approved the purchase of a 24-foot tilt-bed trailer from Extreme Sales for $8,520 using budgeted funds. Commissioners also approved a culvert repair project north of Wilton by Subsurface Inc. at a cost not to exceed $22,440. Grey said the concrete culvert could be repaired rather than replaced and noted reduced mobilization costs because the company was already working in the area.
