Mercer reorganizes

Mercer City Auditor Kathrin Volochenko said the city is “getting back on track” following administrative changes and a period without a full-time auditor earlier this year.
Volochenko, who began her duties Oct. 22, said the transition followed the resignation of the former auditor. During the vacancy, a city council member temporarily assumed basic responsibilities to “keep the lights on,” she said.
Volochenko previously served two terms as mayor and one term as city auditor in Kief. She said the experience has helped her step into the role quickly.
“A lot of it is old hat,” she said, noting bookkeeping is one of her strengths.
One of her first major tasks was transferring the city’s financial records into QuickBooks. Volochenko said she went back an entire year to enter and reconcile accounts, and the process has helped account for a significant portion of outstanding funds.
