More new sidewalks? Commission peruses new additions

The Underwood City Commission made quick work of Monday night’s regular meeting, which included giving the go-ahead to try to get another grant for more work on the former Safe Routes To School project, which is now called TAP, or Transportation Alternative Program.
Dave Thompson of Toman Engineering presented commissioners an initial proposal of which areas of town would potentially be included in the next phase of the sidewalk project, which included Summit Street, Sayler Street and the south side of part of Lincoln Ave. this past summer. Thompson’s proposal includes sidewalks on West McKinley, the north side of West Lincoln Ave., (south of the football field), the north side of Lincoln Ave., the north side of Garfield, and the south side of Roosevelt.
Commissioners gave Thompson the go-ahead to apply for a TAP grant, which because of Underwood’s population, will actually have to be applied for through the county. Thompson planned on attending a county commission meeting Tuesday to get approval from the city county commissioners. The grant application is for approximately $190,000.
Following the meeting, city auditor Diane Schell noted that the proposed route Thompson showed to commissioners is his first plan, and it is possible the route will change following further discussion and public input.
