Poitra, Payne plead ‘guilty’ in Falkirk Mine copper theft case
Two of the three people arrested on felony charges in connection to copper theft from the Falkirk Mine have plead “guilty” to charges. The third individual is set to go to trial in August.
Byron Backman, of Minot, had his jury trial moved from May 29 to Aug. 21, set to take place at 9 a.m.
According to court documents filed in the case, Backman had his bond amended to $10,000 cash from a $25,000 case bond about a week after being arrested in January. It was posted Jan. 17.
In May, Backman obtained a new retained attorney Breanna Delorme, who replaced Public Defender Omid Kardoust. It was cited the trial was continued because Delorme was just stepping in “and unprepared to proceed.”
Backman’s final dispositional conference will be 9 a.m. Aug. 15 in Burleigh County.
