Protect against whooping cough with one easy shot

By Michael Johnson, Editor

Want to keep you and your family healthy and save some dough? The First District Health Unit in McLean County urges you to get a Tdap or Td immunization. For a limited time you can do so for $13.90. The regular cost to do so would be around $50, according to Sandy Birst, registered nurse at First District Health in McLean County. The importance of the immunization is very relevant, Birst said. There has been aninflux in whooping cough cases in California where it is now considered an epidemic. Sporadic cases have been found in North Dakota. Tdap protects against that highly contagious respiratory tract infection. Here’s a little more about the vaccines and why they are important. Td vaccine is recommended for those 7-years of age and younger. It protects against tetanus and diphtheria. Tetanus is a bacteria infection caused by scrapes, cuts or wounds and can cause lock jaw. Diphtheria is spread from person to person and causes a thick covering in the back of the throat.
