School funding/safety issues in hands of legislators

By Suzanne Werre, BHG News Service

A plea to Underwood school’s local patrons recently went out asking for financial help/donations for students to participate in the preschool program offered at Underwood. Underwood Superintendent Brandt Dick is hoping that with the legislature’s help, that extra help won’t be needed for much longer. The bill which could help out the school’s preschool program is just one of a few bills Supt. Dick is keeping track of this legislative session. House Bill 1429, which was discussed in committee Monday morning, would provide grant money to the schools that offer preschool programs, such as Underwood. Wording of the bill states the sum of $5 million or “so much of the sum as may be necessary” would be appropriated to the superintendent of public instruction for the use of early childhood education grants for eligible school districts for the biennium beginning July 31, 2013, and ending June 30, 2015.
