School seeks additional special ed position

By Michael Johnson, Editor

An increase in special needs students prompted the Underwood School Board to approve looking for one additional teacher to help with the added load. There are currently about 35 students that have special education needs. Superintendent Brandt Dick said it was the recommendation of Souris Valley Special Services to add a position. Souris Valley offers services to improve learning for students that require special needs. It will open up one full-time equivalent position. Funding for the position is largely from foundation aid. The board members on the personnel committee heard from five candidates for the open elementary positions. The board recommended hiring two candidates, with whom they were very pleased.
