As the Underwood Comettes look at competing at the North Dakota Association of Dance and Drill state competition this weekend, it’s bittersweet for the team’s three seniors, Miriah Schneider, Brianne Halstead and Michelle Hernandez, who will be competing in their final state competition. For high school dance teams throughout the state, the state competition is the "big dance," the biggest competition of the season.

It’s Miriah and Brianne’s fifth trip to state, having danced varsity when they were eighth-graders. For Michelle, who danced with the Comettes when they won the state hip-hop title three years ago, it’s her second season with the dance team, having attended school elsewhere for the past couple years.

All three, as well as their four other teammates, Paige Weisenberger, Danielle Halstead, Lindsey Landenberger and Callie Berg, have high hopes for this weekend’s competition, as they compete in pom, jazz, hip-hop and kick competitions against other Class B teams from throughout the state.

It’s unanimous with the seniors – they think their best shot at a state title is with their pom routine.

"I think we all get into it . . . it’s really sharp, and our skills are exciting," said Brianne. "There really isn’t much down time; it’s really tiring."
