Sidewalk plan moving ahead

By Suzanne Were, BHG News Service

The Underwood City Commission voted 3-1 in favor of going ahead with the Safe Routes to School proposed sidewalk route at its Monday night meeting, but there’s a stipulation. The stipulation was that if the deadline for the bid-letting set by the Department of Transportation is not THIS Friday, the vote would not be binding. Commissioner Jay Snyder was  upset that the commission was not given the opportunity to give some feedback on the final proposed route before having to put it to a vote.  “We’re always spending money, and with no input,” he said.  “I don’t like that. “I’m the one that made the motion that we accept this grant, with our input into it, and we had none,” he added. Underwood Community Developer Becky Bowen reminded the commission that it is a large sum of money involved with the grant. “If we do turn it down, you’re turning down 200-some-thousand dollars in federal funds,” she noted. Cottingham made the motion to accept the proposed route presented by Toman Engineering’s Harvey Schneider, seconded by Roger Britton.
