American Express has been nationally promoting an event that affects smaller communities across North Dakota. Small Business Saturday is an event that encourages people to Christmas shop in independently owned stores the day after Black Friday.

McLean County has a variety of shops that carry products unique, practical or needed. However, businesses like Sodas ‘n Things, the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center’s gift shop and Chase Drug, specialize in unique items for thoughtful gifts.

"We have items that are made by North Dakota artists that you can’t buy anywhere else except here," said Sarah Trandahl of the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center who sells everything from candles, clothing, décor and jewelry. "We are a lot more than just Lewis and Clark," she said.

When community members shop locally they are investing in the city. This not only keeps the businesses in the area, but also keeps your neighbors, friends and family employed. It spreads economic health and is important for future investments for businesses. "If you like the convenience of having the business, then you need to support them," Trandahl said.
