Something sweet about the first song

By Michael Johnson, Editor

Behind every great musician is the foundation of learning fostered by a patient teacher. Well, maybe they weren’t all patient, but during the McLean Music Camp at the Washburn High School, students from Washburn, Center, Stanton, Wilton, Turtle Lake, Underwood and Garrison gathered to learn the basics of music playing from five patient and talented music teachers from the area. The kids had five days to go from hardly knowing which end they were supposed to blow in on Monday, to performing songs in front of an audience on Friday. From the ears of the teachers, those first few days are trying but magical. For the minds of the children, those first days are trying but unforgettable. And it all starts with the musical stand-by, "HotCross Buns." Thirty-eight fifth-grade students attended the camp, which was partially funded by MREC and a $50 fee from each student.
