This Jewel is a gem

Little Jewel Maxwell was only about 2-years -ld when she saw her grandma Verlaine get her waist-long hair cut for Locks of Love five years ago.

"She told me to put it back on," recalled Verlaine.

Little Jewel, who at almost 7 now, isn’t quite as little anymore, and she must not remember how she felt when she saw her grandma’s lovely locks cut off back then. Because about a month or so ago, Jewel did it herself, cutting her "butt length" hair up to about her shoulders so she could donate her hair to Locks of Love, to be used to create wigs for chemotherapy patients. She didn’t cut it herself. She had her auntie Alex, who works at a salon in Bismarck, cut it.

Watching as Jewel got her hair cut by her auntie Alex was grandma Verlaine, who also got her hair cut that day again, too.

"I got it cut just so Jewel wouldn’t feel like she was the only one," said Verlaine. "They talked me into it."

They, is her family members who were all gathered at daughter Bobbie and Chris Maxwell’s house. It wasn’t exactly planned when Verlaine went over that day.
