Tribes, charitable gaming at odds over online gaming

North Dakota’s f ive Native American tribes are clashing with charitable gaming advocates over exclusive rights to online
gambling and sports betting. The tribe s and the governor are negotiating the gaming compact, which was last signed in 2013 and
is up for renewal at the end of the year. The current compact, which is still under negotiation, would give the tribes exclusive rights to
online gaming in the state, if the server used to complete the transaction is located on a reservation. Online betting is not legal in North Dakota, and sports betting is only allowed at reservation casinos currently. Both charitable gaming advocates and tribal leaders agree that online gaming is the future of the gambling indus t ry. The gaming compact could ensure that the tribes, and the tribes only, receive the revenue from online gaming, and cut out charitable gaming from a piece of the pie.
