Turtle Lake property owners can review proposed street project assessments
Property owners in Turtle Lake now have an opportunity to review the proposed special assessments tied to the city’s Street Improvement District No. 2025-1 project before they become final.
The special assessment list, which is published in this week’s Central McLean News-Journal, outlines how the city proposes to distribute $4 million in project costs among properties that benefited from the street improvement project.
What are special assessments?
Unlike a general tax that is paid by all property owners, a special assessment is a charge levied against properties that are determined to have directly benefited from a public improvement project.
In Turtle Lake’s case, the assessments are associated with Street Improvement District No. 2025-1. The city appointed a special assessment commission to determine how much of the project cost should be assigned to individual parcels within the district based on the benefit received from the improvements.
Special assessments are commonly used by North Dakota communities to help pay for major infrastructure improvements such as street reconstruction, water and sewer projects, stormwater improvements and other capital projects.
