Underwood native to rope at nationals

By Erica Kingston, BHG News Service

In late October, Kelly Simenson will lead his horse, Baby, into the trailer and make a 1,200-mile trek south to arrive in Oklahoma City and compete for a chance to win $50,000. Simenson, a 1984 graduate from Underwood High School, qualified with friend Larry Carlisle for team roping and will be participating in this year’s Cinch United States Team Roping Championship (USTRC)National Finals of Team Roping on Oct. 30 in Oklahoma City, Okla. Simenson and Carlisle qualified for the national competition in August at a roping event in Rapid City, S.D., where they finished fourth out of about 100 teams. Team roping wasn’t always an interest of Simenson’s. Moving to Wyoming six years ago, where he met Carlisle, sparked his interest. He is in his sixth year of roping.
