Zero mills brings zero questions

Nobody showed up with any questions for the Underwood School Board at the public hearing last Wednesday. It could be the public liked the words "zero increase" in the letter most of them received in early August regarding a mill levy increase. In the letter, Supt. Brandt Dick summed up this year’s school tax portion, indicating on a home with a market value of $100,000, a savings of $201.60 would be realized in the comparison between tax year 2013 and 2014 for the school portion of property taxes, and on a market value of farmland of $100,000, there would be a savings of $224 for the farmland, about 37.5 percent.
Supt. Dick noted that not everyone would be seeing a savings this year, but the majority of local patrons are. Anyone having an increase of 15 percent or more should have received a letter informing them of the increase.
The school’s anticipated 2013-14 budget estimates a surplus of $210,912 at the end of the 2014 school year, with total revenue at just over $3 million, the local portion just under $650,000.
With no questions from any local property owners on the "zero increase" mills, the school board moved to its regular monthly meeting.
