Big plays thwart CM Cougars

Saturday’s gridiron game in Underwood really was a cat fight.
The Heart River Cougars broke free for some big-yardage plays that turned into touchdowns Saturday afternoon, holding off the home team Central McLean Cougars by the score of 28-18.
Heart River’s Cade Shypkoski struck first with just under 3-1/2 minutes remaining in the first quarter, breaking for a 68-yard touchdown, followed by a Ryley Nygaard run to put Heart River up by 8 going into the second stanza.
Central McLean threatened to score early in the second quarter when Jared Mitzel reeled in a 49-yard pass from quarterback Hunter Jacobs, putting the Cougars deep in Heart River territory, but a couple plays later, the drive was thwarted when Heart River’s Seth Privratsky picked off the Jacobs pass, giving Heart River possession of the ball deep in their own territory.
Central McLean, however, didn’t let Heart River capitalize on the turnover, taking possession of the ball after the drive, then grinding it out toward the end zone until sophomore Zach Cottingham broke through for a one-yard score. The PAT pass attempt failed, leaving the Central McLean team trailing 8-6 at halftime.
